GEARIN' UP...

Here is a rap up of the quality gear we use when fishing.

The Main focus point of "Getting Connected and Staying Connected" is the type of tackle you employ to catch your desired species. The heavy tackle once deemed mandatory by many anglers has been completely turned around to the lighter end of the scale. So many times in our travels to various fishing destinations has seen many anglers taking an overkill approach towards fishing. Particularly with species such as Barramundi and Bass which require a finesse style of approach. Anglers who engage in this type of tackle overkill are slowly going to find that they are their own worst enemy.

Spinnerbaits:

For Spinnerbaiting our only choice comes from Glen and Sue Casey’s BASSMAN stable.
These weapons of mass destruction stand alone and are the #1 Spinnerbait that money can buy in this huge fishing industry that Australia bears.
The quality hardware that is used to build these baits ensures strength and security when swapping skirts with our native fish.
We use baits from the “Codman” , “Mumbler” and TW Bass range and have enjoyed major success over the last couple of years, and the huge range of spinnerbaits that Bassman produce are nothing short of awesome and are designed for most species of our natives. All you need to know about these spinnerbaits can be found on the Bassman tab on our links page.

Lurking the depths:
To get the best out of a large lure designed for dragging those big Murray Cod off the bottom is to consider the depth in which it will run at when trolled or cast. We prefer to use lures that swim down to around the 25ft- 30ft mark. Lures of choice are 150mm AC Invaders and Muldoon’s Big Mong. Another lure of choice that doesn’t reach those depths but is a major weapon in our selection is the very rare and famous Peter Newell Kadaitcha. These lures have accounted for more Murray Cod and Golden Perch than one could poke a stick at. Classified as “Oz’s best Murray Cod lure” it is a must have in any serious anglers box.

OUR FAVOURITE DEEP DIVERS 150mm AC INVADERS PLUS THE BIG MONG, AVAILABLE THRU CODMAC

Getting connected with proper Knots:
Knot strength is a huge factor and contributes to 99% of connection failures in the anglers’ line. For many anglers it is deemed that a nice thick braid or nylon line will be perfect for landing a fish. This is all too good until connecting with a potential fish of a lifetime comes along and the old twang comes out. The downfall of most outfits is a dodgy line/braid or leader knot.
A popular approach for most anglers these days is to attach a “leader” to their braid to allow for abrasion, transparency and feel.
We attach a Co-Polymer leader material to all our lines as its strength, neat tie and abrasion resistance is superb.
We attach all of our lines to leaders via a Tony Jones Leader Knot attached to a Bimini loop tied in the braid. We strictly do not use snap swivels as this is just another weak point in your connection. Most are them are cheap and nasty and are unnecessary to use.
We attach lures with an eye/ split ring via a loop knot and lures such as Spinnerbaits that are like a coat hanger style, we connect with the old plain and simple half blood knot. To date a neatly tied simple half blood knot has never let us down on any of our desired species of fish.

Batteries:

There is only one way to go when choosing which battery to use and that choice is Century Batteries. Whether it be deep cycle batteries for our electric motors, cranking batteries or depth sounder batteries Century is our #1 choice and are by far the strongest and most reliable battery on today’s mammoth battery market. For those long days on the water when you can’t afford to have batteries that discharge rapidly and constantly fail, these batteries are superb.

When Mother Nature switches on:

Whether it’s the cold winter winds or torrential rain conditions the team at Backlash Stormgear has us covered.
Mick May and the crew at Backlash provide us with all our wet weather gear made from quality Denier nylon that ensures us maximum waterproof efficiency.
Their cotton lined jackets also provide warmth unlike other cheap and nasty plastic waterproof gear.
